About Us

Making a graceful and timely transition to a low carbon future is what brings us together.

Why Transition Sitka?

The Transition Sitka group formed in late 2021, at the end of the second year of the COVID 19 pandemic. It started with the idea that there was something missing from our town’s response to impacts from climate change. A sense of urgency. A sense of the consequences. A serious plan of some kind. A need to begin acting, rather than trying to convince someone else to take action.

The idea started in a meeting about creating political will for meaningful climate action. We had a lot in common, similar fears, similar hopes, but becoming a transition town was the first thing that we all really agreed about. Taking action ourselves to meet the challenges of changing climate and changing energy systems. Using the creativity, knowledge, and resources of the people who love this place. Becoming more self-reliant and capable as a community.
